I. INTRODUCTION
The Webster's Talking Dictionary/Thesaurus
will provide you with an excellent software
tool. It is based on the highly reputable
Random House version of the Webster's College
Dictionary. With the use of the hot-key
feature of the program WTD/T is an excellent
companion for your word processing program.
Assist your children with their spelling and
vocabulary skills. You will find words used
in thousands of sample sentences.
The opinions of our customers have always
been very important to Parsons Technology and
have proven to be of immense value. Give us
your ideas of additional features that you
would like to see in WTD/T. You can contact
us in a number of ways. In the program click
on Help,Contents,Technical Support. You will
find phone numbers and other ways that you
can communicate with us.
II. ABOUT TEXT-TO-SPEECH
Text to speech technology is used to convert
text into "human sounding synthetic speech".
Technically, it involves a conversion of the
text into a "phonetic transcription" which
then is calculated into "speech parameters"
which are used to generate "synthetic speech
signals". The result is that your system
actually is "speaking" rather than playing
back recorded voices or sounds.
Why use Text-to-speech? Disk space. The
amount of space needed for recorded files
would take up all the disk space on most
home systems. A CD version would be very
unmanageable (a CD for every 3 or 4 letters
of the alphabet), requiring you to swap CDs
continuously.
III. PROGRAM NOTES
1. MPC compatibility
If you do not have an MPC compatibility
sound card, you will not get the full
features of WTD/D. This will be evident if
you do not see several speak buttons or a
"Speak" menu. In addition, you may not be
able to use the hot-key and replace function.
2. Case-sensitivity (caps/small letters)
The "search for" field is case sensitive,
meaning that it makes a difference whether
the letters are capitalized or small. With
very few exceptions, biographical and geo-
graphical entries begin with a capital letter.
3. Hot-key and replace feature
This topic is discussed in the on-line Help
under Basic Operations, Searching for Words,
Automatic Searching.
How it works:
-Be sure WTD/T is open
-Open your word processing program and open
a document
-highlight a word and press the hot-key
combination, i.e. CTRL+Shift+D
-in the dictionary or thesaurus highlight a
word and click on replace.
If the hot-key does not work check the hot-
key setting (File menu). If you are sure of
the hot-key selection and it still is not
working, restart Windows.
Some hot-keys may conflict with functions in
your word processing program. Try other
combinations. If the hot-key replaces
characters in the document close WTD/T and
try the hot-key. If the behavior persists,
it probably is a function of the word
processing program.
4. Highlighting text
You may find definitions where you cannot
highlight and copy all of the definition in
one operation. The best approach when you
find these situations is to use multiple
highlight/copy/paste operations.
